Eight months on, an update on Gemma and her Bobike Mini bike seat

Since I published the piece on the Bobike Mini on the Camden Cycling Campaign website, I've had lots of responses, and lots of questions. Gemma was still quite small when we started using the seat, and it's now been about eight months since then. Here's an update.

We continued to use the seat throughout the winter, though we didn't think it was a good idea to do the nursery run when it was dark (which unfortunately restricted our rides to weekend bagel runs for the most part!). Sure, it was pretty cold a lot of the time, but we bundled Gemma up in a one-piece fleece suit from Columbia (Patagonia does them for babies too), with a waterproof one-piece over the top.

Also, I bought the matching windscreen (see below) and had it installed at the Bicycle Workshop. This turned out to be no easy feat, since the bar/stem combo on my bike made fitting it a bit awkward. It fits to the same bracket that the seat slides into, but my particular setup essentially meant that it couldn't come off again without dismantling the bars again - and it's really tough to take the seat off with the windscreen on. So I've had the seat and windscreen on pretty much all the time since last autumn.

And I wouldn't mind that so much really, if my knees didn't touch the seat when pedalling. For some reason, this bit of awkwardness didn't dawn on me right away - but it's now a slight annoyance. In fact, as soon as it warms up a bit, the windscreen is coming off to allow us to swap the seat between bikes easier and so I can take it off when not needed.

I've had lots of questions about whether Gemma still fits in the seat, and we have no problems there. Still plenty of room to extend the footrests and the safety belt. I expect that we'll be using the seat with her until next autumn if not into the winter.

She loves going for a ride now more than ever, often clapping and laughing the whole time. She also loves the pink bell we got her - I ring mine and Gemma rings hers. She only needs to see me trot out her helmet to start her jabbering away with enthusiasm!
