Camden Local East-West Route
WEST END LANE TO KILBURN HIGH ROAD
Looking east up Sherriff Road from the junction with Lowfield Road; Sherriff Road is one-way east-bound (uphill towards West End Lane). Why not make it two-way?
(One problem would be that the Sherriff Road/West End Lane junction can get congested, and would be difficult for cyclists to access from Compayne Gardens)
Looking west along Netherwood Street from the junction with Lowfield Road; Netherwood Street is two-way, but in fact narrower than Sherriff Road.
Though Netherwood Street is usually much less parked up:
(Middle section of Netherwood Street, looking east.)
The problem with Netherwood Street is its junction with Kilburn High Road:
Cyclists I imagine will want either to turn right to go north or to left in order then to turn right straightaway into Dyne Road to head towards Willesden. The view of the first manoeuvre:
The traffic signalized pedestrian crossing should assist cyclists in getting to the far side north bound lane.
Looking south towards the junction with Dyne Road:
This is going to be an awkward manoeuvre for some cyclists.
MORNINGTON STREET TOWARDS ROYAL COLLEGE STREET
The suggested route for east-bound cyclists is along Mornington Street, Miller Street and Plender Street. As the consultant says, there is "a minor pinch point due to buildings that will need closer attention (in Miller Street)". Few cyclists will be familiar with Miller Street, so here it is from the Mornington Street / Arlington Street junction:
At the end of Miller Street (cobbled!), the road ends:
With a short pedestrian stretch:
(Notice the potential to remove/relocate the planter and create more space for cyclists/pedestrians.)
Then the road resumes:
- looking towards Camden High Street. As can be seen, there is a signalized pedestrian crossing just to the north of the junction of Miller Street and Camden High Street:
The problem is that Plender Street is off to the right, and so one couldn't cycle out of Miller Street into Plender Street, at least not without turning the pedestrian crossing into a toucan. The alternative would be to use the road to the south of Miller Street, namely Carlow Street:
The problem here is that there are steps down to the continuation of the road towards Camden High Street:
(Looking eastward.)
(Looking westward. But notice the space on either side of the steps.)
Thereafter, easy enough to get to Camden High Street:
and then turn left and then right into Plender Street:
