General info
This site was built using Plone, an open source web-based content management system.
Since moving to Nidelven the versions we are running are Zope 2.7.8 and Plone 2.0.5.
Why Plone?
For the next incarnation of the CCC website, we wanted to take the pressure off just one person for design, updating, and maintenance, so a proper CMS seemed to be the way to go.
Plone made it to the top of the heap because it's flexible, (reasonably!) easy to configure, and the out-of-the-box functionality is pretty slick.
And since it's open source, that means the code doesn't belong to anyone, and we don't have to pay for the privledge of using it! Open source products like Plone, Zope (the technology Plone runs on), and Linux are developed and maintained by the people who use them for the good of the community, not for direct commercial gain - which is very much consistent with ideals of cycling advocacy groups like us.
Of course, as wonderful as Plone seems so far, there's been a lot of learning behind getting the site up and going. For the benefit of others seeking to set up Plone sites, there is a page with development notes by the webmaster outlining what he's learned along the way.
Site Content
After three years, most of the content in this site is new, but at the start, most of the material was migrated from the previous Camden Cycling Campaign website, which was lovingly maintained by Paul Gasson for several years. Credit for content brought from his site is given where appropriate.
