Bike shops, maps, training and mentoring, security, advice

We love cycling in Camden and hope that these pages may help others to do so. If you live in the borough, you may want to know about the bike shops and how to get route advice. If you're returning or new to cycling you may need training. Everybody needs to think about cycle security.

Bike Shops in Camden and about buying a bike

Details of all our local bike shops, where they are and whether they offer discounts, plus places in London for hiring bikes. Bike Shops in Camden

The London Cycling Campaign(LCC) website contains useful information about buying a bike. It tells you the basics you need to know about bikes and gives advice regarding the essential extras (e.g. a reliable lock). It also tells you about the different types of bike available and how much they should cost. Buying a Bike

Training for beginners or those who are starting again

If you would like to have cycle training to prepare you for cycling in London, then there are many options, starting with free cycle training from Camden council. Getting Cycle training in Camden and London

The LCC Website provides information on Getting Started on a Bike

Mentoring

We have found that many people who return to cycling can ride their bikes alright, but don't know much about good routes or how to get through the traffic to their workplace. For this reason, Camden Cycling Campaign (CCC) has a scheme enabling people to ride with more experienced cyclists. You can find out about our mentoring scheme at: CCC's mentoring scheme

Key things to remember

  • most cyclist deaths are caused by left-turning lorries, so don't ride on the inside of lorries;
  • many injuries are caused by car doors being opened in front of cyclists, so take care to pass parked cars with one metre to spare;
  • remember to respect pedestrians and wait for them at pedestrian crossings Rules of the road advice written by Paul Gasson in 2002, but still just as relevant;
  • try to abide by the Highway Code!

Maintenance of your bike

The LCC website tells you about Maintaining your bike

In addition, CCC hold cycle maintenance workshops and Dr. Bikes. See the upcoming events panel on the right column of every page on this site for details.

Security of your Bike

Velib, Paris self-service bike hire

Vélib' is a new form of transport infrastructure that every city should have - read a report on experiences of using the Paris Vélib system during a metro strike in November 2007. Report on Experiences with Vélib' Paris.

CCC's on-line Cycle Maps

We started a project in Jan 2007 based on Google Maps to display cycle routes in Camden and nearby. It displays LCN routes, routes donated by members and locations of Bike Shops as well as cycle parking in some areas. Members are supplying us with their favourite routes and some are helping by adding bike stands to the map.
