Camley Street Report 2003, Kings Cross development, Camden Council design 2006

Background

The Camley Street cycle and pedestrian link would bridge the gap between Camley Street and Agar Grove. Streetmap location

This idea was initially suggested by Peter Wills and was then taken up by Paul Gannon. In late 2002, Paul Gannon and Peter Wills appleid for a Camden Central Community Chest grant to fund a deisgn study. They were successful and Tom Young was appointed to carry out the work.

The Camley Street Report was released in Autumn 2003 Download The Camley Street Report (4 Mbytes).

The report was presented by Tom Young and Paul Gannon to a members meeting in November 2003. You could read about it in Newsletter Dec 03/Jan 04

The proposed link will run next to the west side of the Midland Mainline railway track between the north end of Camley Street and Agar Grove. It will join Agar Grove to the west of the railway bridge, opposite the end of Murray Street. However Agar Grove is about 5 metres higher than the top of Camley Street.

If this link is built it will provide a useful cycle and pedestrian link between the Agar Grove area and the new Kings Cross development as well as giving access to the Camley Street Nature Reserve and the Jubilee Centre and St Pancras Church gardens.

Next Steps 2004-6

Camden Council officers advised CCC that we should try to get the Camley Street link funded under Section 106 on the Kings Cross development, but that this will take many years.

In all of our responses to the various stages of the Kings Cross consultation CCC has stressed the importance of the Camley Street link.

At the Camden Council meeting for the final decision on the Kings Cross development, Hugh lake of the Camden Square CAAC spoke strongly in favour of the link.

Summer 2006

Paul Braithwaite, long time CCC member and new Lib Dem councillor on Camden Council has decided to become a champion of the Camley Street link. He has been negotiating with Camden Officers to have the work done by Camden Council rather than waiting for many years for it to be built by Argent.

Paul came to our members meeting on 14th August and reported on progress. Minutes of the meeting

Camden Council has Greenway funding for design and implementation Spring 2007

Following funding for consultation in August 2006, a site meeting was held with Dave Stewart on 8 December. Stakeholders present included Peter Wills, Herrman Tribelnig, Norman Shepherd (Camden Square CAAC)and CCC (JD).

Dave Stewart and Maria Georgiou are running the project. The route will be on embankment rather than as a separate structure as proposed by Tom Young.

The public consultation came out in August 2007

Consultation details

Record numbers of responses were received and the work was given the go-ahead by Camden Council.

Spring 2008

The trees on embankment were cut down. The route can now exit via the railway bridge into Agar Grove since the parapet doesn't belong to Network Rail.
