Abbey Road zebra crossing – relocation of bus stop
COUNCIL TEXT
I am writing to ask your views on the Council’s proposal to relocate the bus stop from outside 48 Priory Road to outside 143 Abbey Road.
In August 2004, the Council consulted residents on a proposal to install a zebra crossing on Abbey Road, either outside St Mary’s Church or outside Sylvan Court. On 16 November 2004, the Council approved the installation of the zebra crossing outside St Mary’s Church, which was constructed in February this year.
Originally, we intended to relocate the bus stop to outside Priory Lodge. However, further investigations indicated that this was not a suitable location because it compromised the safety of passengers entering and exiting the buses.
The area was surveyed again and it was concluded that the stretch of pavement outside 143 Abbey Road would be the most suitable area to relocate the bus stop. To reach this conclusion, officers considered the routes taken by passengers to and from the bus stop and the siting of bus stops near pedestrian crossings and junctions, thus allowing passengers to complete their journey safely.
In conjunction with the bus stop relocation, the Council proposes to upgrade the restrictions around Priory Terrace to double yellow ‘Weighting and Loading’ restrictions on the kerb.
The repositioning of the bus stop will result in a net loss of two resident’s parking spaces within the area. The Council tried to minimise the disruption this might cause, but, due to the large demand on parking already in the area, we are not able to replace the lost parking.
The Council would be pleased to hear your views on the proposed measures. Details on how to respond to this consultation are given on the back page of this leaflet.
CCC's response
Question 1 Do you agree with the proposal to relaocate the bus stop, shelter and flag to outside 143 Abbey Raod?
YES
Question 2
Do you agree with the proposal to upgrade the restrictions arond Priory Terrace to double yellow Weighting and Loading restrictions?
YES
We approve of the installation of the zebra crossing and are happy with the relocation of the bus stop. We feel the Council should be less apologetic about the reduction in parking spaces, given that it is committed to reducing car use in the borough.
