Walking Scheme - Cleveland Street / Howland Street / New Cavendish Street, W1. Proposed pedestrian and cycle facilities

The junction of Cleveland Street / Howland Street / New Cavendish Street has been identified by the Council, as requiring improved pedestrian and cycle facilities to encourage walking and cycling within the area.

Cleveland Street and Howland Street are located within Camden Borough whilst New Cavendish Street is located in Westminster Borough. As this junction is near to The Middlesex Hospital (Annex), University of Westminster and University College of London, it attracts a high pedestrian activity.

The Council would therefore like to improve this junction by providing the following (as shown on the attached drawing).

• A new pedestrian crossing facility across New Cavendish Street and Cleveland Street (north) arms of the junction. (At present, pedestrians can cross only Howland Street and the southern arm of Cleveland Street).

• A new cyclists’ stop area across the southern arm of Cleveland Street.

The provision of the proposals listed above would not increase delays to traffic, but instead improve the operation of the junction. This would be achieved by distributing the time allocated for traffic on Howland Street and Cleveland Street (south) based on the traffic queues on these roads.

CCC's response

Camden Cycling Campaign has consulted its members about these proposals. The proposed ASL box and feeder lane on Cleveland Street is clearly going to be beneficial for cyclists.

The proposed pedestrian crossings on all four arms of the junction are clearly going to be beneficial for pedestrians.

We therefore give full support to these proposals.
