Albany Street Bus Lane

Document Actions
Dates: consultation April 2008; reply due 16 June 2008. Decision by Asst Director of Culture and Environment. Officer Lisa Pryce and Bec Hayes. CCC member dealing with it Dominic Tinley. REPLIED 15 June 2008.

Map Location

Camden Council proposes to reduce the length of the southbound bus lane, a little south of Robert Street and to reduce bus lane hours.

They offer various options for the allocation of parking to pay and display, residents and loading only.

In general bus lanes are useful to cyclists, so we have to consider whether the reduction of hours on one section of bus lane and loss of another section will be detrimental to cyclists safety and convenience.

CCC's response

Camden Cycling Campain does not agree with either proposal. Albany Street is currently a very pleasant, wide road which feels safe for cyclists and is well used throughout the day. Ending the bus lane where the Council proposes creates a double pinch point as the parking bays would start immediately after what is currently a pedestrian crossing (there seem to be no plans to move the crossing). Reducing the hours of the bus lane and allowing parking and loading during the day effectively makes it a single-lane road except for commuting hours. It seems a backward step.
