Camden Council proposes improvements to the junction of South Grove and Highgate West Hill to improve safety for cyclists.

Another scheme was consulted on in December 2007, Click here to see the original consultation. However, this is an LCN+ scheme and CCC rejected the design, so Camden are now re-consulting on a more suitable proposal.

The junction is to be raised and priorities changed so that South Grove becomes a give-way road at this junction.

The consultation also includes some "Phase 2" work which is for pedestrian improvements related to 2012 cycling events which will take place here.

CCC's response

CCC supports the proposed measures.

The main problem for cyclists at this junction has been from northbound motor traffic turning into The Grove resulting in a "left-hook" situation for cyclists proceeding on up Highgate West Hill. Additionally, sight lines are poor and vehicle speeds can be high. We think that the proposal to re-align the roads and include a raised junction will help address these concerns as well as making it safer for pedestrians. We have some concerns about cyclists turning right into South Grove as they will be in the middle of the road and sight-lines for northbound vehicles will not be great, but we believe that the raised junction should mitigate that.
