Details of CRISP on Route 39 (Link 50)

Carlos de Rocha, CCS. Questionnaire received June 25 2008. Reply due 18 July 2008. CRIM 27 Nov 2009.

London Borough of Camden has Commissioned Camden Consultancy Services to carry out s study (CRISP) of the LCN+ cycle route 39 between its west and east borough boundaries (New Oxford Street to Rosebery Avenue, respectively.

They state that the route being considered is shown on the enclosed plan and includes the following roads (from west to east): New Oxford Street, Bloomsbury Way, Vernon Place, Theobald’s Road and Rosebery Avenue (up to Amwell Street).

But we all know that Bloomsbury Way is currently one way and that westbound cyclists on Theobalds Road are forced to turn left along Drake Street and Proctor Street along High Holborn and then join the contraflow bus lane in New Oxford Street.

Although a contraflow bus lane is proposed for Bloomsbury Way as part of Route 38 bus improvements, it will be only 3 metres wide and it is unlikely that we will be allowed to cycle in it. CCC did try to negotiate with designers at the time of the consultation, but were told there would be problems if cyclist leave the lane to overtake a bus.

CRIM

The CRIM was held on 27th November 2008.

Pre-CRIM Report

The main issue on this route is whether cyclists can use the contraflow bus lane in Bloomsbury Way - but as it hasn't yet been implemented, we couldn't inspect it. Yet maybe there is scope for getting the bus lane widened.

No CRIM Notes yet circulated (15th Jan).
