Link 30 CRIM

Document Actions
14th August 2008; we inspected the existing link as well as a proposed relief route

The CRIM commenced with an hours meeting at Town Hall, then we were on the road by 11 am. First we rode the SSL (blue line on the map.

Dave Stewart, Carlos Da Rocha, Brian Deagan, Julie Reid, Richard Riddle, Rik Andrew, Trevor Parsons, Jean Dollimore (and for first half John Lee)

  • Start at junction Judd Street (1) and cycle east via Ampton Street(2) and on to Kings Cross Road (3).
  • Then go west back to Judd Street (4), continue west via Byng Place (5), Tottenham Court Road (6), Howland Street (7).
  • including Huntley Street (9), and Capper Street.

Main points made on SSL

Route will eventually use Huntley Street, Capper Street in both directions, abandoning Maple Street and Tottenham Court Roda

a) Signage east of Ampton Street;

b) crossing from Ampton St over Grays Inn Road westbound (Dave already has proposal for advanced green signal for cyclists);

c) closure at Regents Sq to deter traffic (Rik keen but Dave skeptical)

d) west side of Regents Square two-way at least for cycling

e) Judd St intersection: study newly implemented crossing (needs more signage, most cyclists use it correctly)

e') Marchmont Street junction; Dave says apart from car drivers, nobody uses as intended; we suggested removal ofleft turn into M Street and revert to normal signals (Dave skeptical)

f) Safety concern at junction with west side Gordon Square; suggestions

  • closure at Byng Place to deter traffic to/from Gower St;
  • closure at Euston Rd/Gordon St and re-routing of rail traffic

(Dave skeptical)

g) Huntley Street 2-way for cycling

h) Straight across TCRd (2-way) between Capper Street and Howland Street

i) Howland St to be 2-way for cycling, closed at TCtRd

Route 0 Relief Route

After a good buffet lunch at the Belpoori in Drummond Street we rode the western end in both directions. (See on the mauve line on the map)

  • Start at Bedford Square (1) then go west via Bayley Street (2), Percy Street and into Charlotte Street (3)
  • Return down Charlotte Street and east Percy Street (4) and Bedford Square (5) and Montague Place (6).
  • Russell Square (7) investigate both Bernard Street (8) and Guilford Street (9)

Main points made on Relief Route

a) Bedford Square two-way cycling on north side - contraflow on edge of bound gravel area (Dave says to make crossing over Gower Street we may have to take out one green man)

b) Bayley Street 2-way cycling

c) Percy St 2-way cycling

d) Charlotte Street two way throughout (currently 1-way south of Windmill)

e) Crossing of Tottenham Court Road betwen Percy Street and Bayley Street (very tricky, but probably possible)

f) Guilford Street 2-way cycling throughout (we gave up on Bernard Street. Probably have contraflow as far as Herbrand and then two way)

This depends on the Russell Square two way scheme currently under consultation.
