Campaigns
As you will see below, cycle campaigning is not just about getting a new cycle lane somewhere.
Permeability Campaign
For cyclists, permeability is about being able to ride through a network of streets in the most direct manner. Unfortunately, routes are often made longer by one way streets, forbidden turns and road closures. Road changes to increase permeability might include: making an exception for cycle traffic in a traffic order, e.g. 'no right turn except cycles'; contraflow cycle lanes; a dropped kerb opposite an entrance to a park as well as cycle gaps through road closures and two-way cycling in one-way streets. Read more about the campaign.
Motorcycles and bus lanes
Before his election, Mayor Boris Johnson pledged to allow motorised two-wheelers to ride in bus lanes; Read our case and supporting research CCC took a deputation to Camden council on 8th September 2008 to persuade them to prevent this from happening on Camden's roads. Read our post mortem on the deputation. The TfL consultation on motorcycles in bus lanes will close in Jan 2010. What is remarkable is that you can reply as many times as you like…..TfL says bikes in bus lanes report allows no meaningful comparison
Regents Park
CCC is participating in the Campaign for Cycling in Regents Park together with the LCC Parks and Canals Group on which Anne Boston is a member. Things have improved since the appointment of Mark Camley (Chief Executive) of Royal Parks in 2006. Trial of cycling on Broadwalk in Summer 2007. Another 18 month trial started in Summer 2008. In autumn and winter 2008-9 we worked on a new idea for the Outer Circle. January 2010, Regents Park Broad Walk is to become a permanent cycle way. More about the Regents Park campaign.
St Pancras International
This joint campaign with City Cyclists was launched by a demonstration at St Pancras International on 14th November 2007. It aimed to get adequate cycle parking, carriage of a bike on the same train and safe and convenient access by cycle to the Station.
Read about the background and the outcomes
Just in time for the demo, parking for 100 bikes was installed in the Car Park at St Pancras International. Originally you could walk in via the Car Park entrance. But this has no longer been the case since autumn 2008 (now Jan 2010.
April 2008 – you can take your bike on the same train with you. June 2008 access map on Eurostar website.
Camden Council has published cycle safety audit on the roads around the station in April 2008. Almost all of it has now been implemented.
Camden Council designed and implemented most of link to the SSL by summer 2008: only two-way cycling in Regents Square remains to be done - funding is available from Cycle Hire complementary measures.
Hampstead Heath
Our old campaign was dormant from 2001, but has been active again since summer 2006. See the latest news on the Campaign.
Camden Council was awarded £30K Greenway funding for 2007-8 to build the shared use path on Spaniards Road. This was completed in 2008. .
CCC campaigns in the Kings Cross Area
The large area to be redeveloped by Argent and the new stations at St Pancras have kept CCC's Kings Cross Team (John Chamberlain, Anne Boston and James Brander) busy ever since 2004. The history of this campaign is described in CCC campaigns in the Kings Cross Area
Camley Street link
This campaign started in 2000 and ended very successfully with the link being completed and opened on 7th August 2009.
Read illustrated report on the opening
The link still requires signage and the CCTV isn't yet installed, the way out at Agar grove needs a dropped kerb, the anti-motorcycle gates are a bit much, but otherwise it's a great enhancement to routes in Camden
Swiss Cottage Gyratory
A campaign started in July 2007. We really would like to have the gyratory revert to two-way working. Following a very disappointing consultation from TfL, we brought this up at WCRSAG on 4th July and were supported by all present. However, the gyratory remains in place in Januray 2010 with no prospect of any change.
Read illustrated account of protest ride.

A bypass route has been signed via Winchester Road.
LCC Cultural campaign
We started to participate in LCC Cultural campaign
May 2007: Access to camden lock area, where camdenlock.net puts coming by bike first and links to our map with a route and bike stands.
We have had some influence on Eurostar website where they now show a map of cycle routes to the station based on one we designed.
But unfortunately, we had no responses from others we chased and interest declined.
Judd Street one way?
In Spring 2006 we were busy with a campaign to prevent Judd Street from becoming one way (to protect the safety of Route 6 in Mabledon Place) and to have two-way cycling in Midland Road. Details of the Judd Street campaign. Judd Street is to remain two-way and Midland Road is currently under discussion under Kings Cross area cycling.
Assessing the need for cycling facilities
CCC has a sufficiently large number of members for it to be able to demonstrate the need for cycling facilities. But we need constantly to find out what is needed, which we do by a variety of different means:
- through our monthly meetings, mailing list and website
- at events like the cyclists breakfasts where cyclists stop and talk to us
- through questionnaires
Very many of the useful improvements for cyclists have occurred through the council's introduction of 20 mph zones, clear zones, home zones and road closures. Therefore we support these enthusiastically whilst checking the details for cycle friendliness.
Responding to consultations
CCC is a consultee on the council's proposed road schemes. Responding to these is a regular background campaigning task, which is undertaken by Jean Dollimore, Stefano Casalotti, Meade McCloughan, John Chamberlain and Dominic Tinley. Input to our responses via the mailing list from cyclists with local knowledge helps us to do a better job. The details of our responses to consultations over the last five years are shown on a separate set of web pages at: Consultations
Meetings with Camden Officers
CCC has regular meetings with Dave Stewart of Camden Council to discuss the details of projects being planned and implemented. See: Cycle facility engineering
Other ongoing campaigns:
Bicycle storage in peoples homes managed by John Chamberlain.
Respect for pedestrians managed by Stefano Casalotti.
