Notes on West Hampstead-Kilburn Permeability
Meeting with Matthew George, Simi Shah and Costa Kakouratos, 11 July 2011
Camden Cyclists had presented a case to Camden Council for two-way cycling in Priory Road in April 2010. However, when we (Meade McCloughan and Jean Dollimore ) were invited to participate in a discussion on the West Hamstead area, (specifically, Priory Road, Cleve Road, Canfield Gardens, Greencroft Gardens, Broadhurst Gardens and Goldhurst Terrace) we presented a list and a map of our recommendations. They the told us that Sherriff Road, Gascony Avenue and Messina Avenue and Smyrna Road may also be considered, so we extended our proposals to the Kilburn area.

At the meeting, LB Camden proposed Priory Road, Sheriff Road, Broadhurst Gardens, Cleve Road/Canfield Gardens, Greencrosft Gardens, Goldhurst Terrace, Messina Avenue and Gascony Avenue. In the discussion, we made the following points:
- we welcome the proposal for Priory Road and are keen to keep the part of Broadhurst Gardens west of Priory Road.
- we are keen to have two-way cycling at the western end of Canfield Gardens (as an extension of the two-way Campayne Gardens)
- we think two-way cycling in the remainder of Broadhurst Gardens and in the remainder Cleve/Canfield is unwise because of the bus route,
- we support the proposal for Sheriff Road as an enhancement to the east west route
- we asked for the Smyrna-Gascony alignment and support Messina Avenue west of Kingsgate Road
- we reminded Camden that a small section of Fairhazel Gardens needs to be made two-way for cyclists
- we are against Goldhurst Terrace as it is too steep
Simi Shah said that the next step is to get a road safety audit carried out to establish which of the proposed routes are feasible in terms of road safety.
Meade asked about cycle parking in the area.
We were also asked about a particular safety measure in West End Lane involving the widening of the footway just north of the junction with Inglewood Road. It will be necessary to remove the cycle lane in this location should the planned footway widening be implemented.
