Cycle counts on SSL Feb 2006
The counts took place at seven locations: On the east-west cycle route on Tavistock Place and Torrington Place, to the west of the junction with each of the following roads:
Marchmont Street; Woburn Place; Bedford Way;
Gordon Street (in Byng Place); Malet Street; Gower Street; Huntley Street.
At each site, counts were recorded for each interval of 15 minutes between 7-10 am and 4-7 pm over a period of five weekdays.
The following plots show the AM and PM average count at each site.
In the morning, the westbound cyclists on the track (blue line left to right)increase in numbers until Woburn Place (nearly 500) but then gradually decrease to just below 400 from Byng Place onwards.
The eastbound cyclists (red line right to left) run at about 200 with a trough at Byng Place.
In the evening, there are less westbound cyclists, but they do reach almost 300 at Gower Street.
The number eastbound cyclists gradually builds up to 436 at Bedford Way and then drops off a little at each junction.
Totals
Adding up the cyclists in both directions for both AM and PM periods, the site at Woburn Place has the most - 1422.
But all of the sites from Marchmont Street to Malet Street have more than 1200 cyclists in these periods.
