Guiding Principles for LCN
Guiding Principles for the London Cycle Network - LCC's key criteria for good cycle route/network design
Formulated by the London Cycling Campaign
We consider that the London Cycle Network infrastructure is a key element in a healthy and viable transport infrastructure for the capital capable of meeting government economic, social and environmental objectives. Therefore the LCN routes should:
- allow access by cycle to all significant destinations
- complete missing links
- be direct - employing no more than a 10% deviation measured by time or distance (Greater London Council research 1984)
- follow the most level course
- be accessible throughout the day and night (unless there is a satisfactory alternative)
- offer priority to those travelling by cycle
- allow easy access and egress for cyclists at all junctions
- offer convenient and secure cycle parking at all destinations
- be comfortable, convenient and safe to use without danger from parked cars
- be signed to enable a stranger to navigate with ease
- avoid heavy traffic and pollution
- be accessible for all cyclists, whether disabled, vulnerable or able bodied
- have a smooth surface
- be kept free from debris
- be planned to combine economically with regeneration, other environmental improvements and measures to manage other traffic whether motorised or foot.
- facilitate linkage with other sustainable transport modes
- enhance environmental quality
- assume a standard of skill and road awareness of a competent 12 year old, or an inexperienced adult
- be designed and constructed to a high standard.
