Advice for anyone who wants to start cycling again or to take it up from scratch or who is new to cycling in London

This page assembles links to information about getting a bike, cycle training, mentoring, cycle maintenance and how to join London Cycling Campaign.

Getting a bike

The London Cycling Campaign(LCC) website contains useful information about buying a bike. It tells you the basics you need to know about bikes and gives advice regarding the essential extras (e.g. a reliable lock). It also tells you about the different types of bike available and how much they should cost.

Buying a Bike

It tells you where you can buy new or second hand bikes.

And on this CCC website you can find out the location of the cycle shops in Camden as well as places to hire bikes and people who do repairs.

Learning to ride (or starting again)

The LCC Website provides information on Getting Started on a Bike

If you would like to have cycle training to prepare you for cycling in London, then there are many options, starting with free cycle training from Camden council.

Key things to remember

  • most cyclist deaths are caused by left-turning lorries, so don't ride on the inside of lorries;
  • many injuries are caused by car doors being opened in front of cyclists, so take care to pass parked cars with one metre to spare;
  • remember to respect pedestrians and wait for them at pedestrian crossings;
  • try to abide by the Highway Code!

Mentoring

We have found that many people who return to cycling can ride their bikes alright, but don't know much about good routes or how to get through the traffic to their workplace. For this reason, Camden Cycling Campaign (CCC) has a scheme enabling people to ride with more experienced cyclists. You can find out about our mentoring scheme at:

Finding the route

Transport for London in conjunction with LCC had produced a set of 19 maps showing cycle routes in London. You can pick them up at underground stations and some bike shops.

Or you can find routes on the web by using the

Transport for London Journey Planner

You have to set it up to give a cycle route by first choosing "more search options" then scroll down and select "the cycle only option".

Maintenance of your bike

The LCC website tells you about Maintaining your bike

In addition, CCC hold self-help workshops and Dr. Bikes. See the upcoming events panel on the right column of every page on this site for details
