In response to LCC Manifesto

I enthusiastically support your manifesto, which I believe goes a long way to ensuring that the cheapest, fastest, cleanest, most healthy form of transport in London gets the priority it merits for attention and funding. I am slightly hesitant about returning roads to 2-way traffic, though I would advocate contra-flow cycle lanes in some instances, subject to safety considerations concerning cross streets and car drivers not looking out for bicycles.

In addition to your manifesto proposals, as a cyclist I would personally lobby for the following:

  • a Cycling Champion in every borough, e.g. Barnet, as I believe this innovation has worked very well for Camden and its cyclists
  • creation of dual use cycle and pedestrian paths in the Royal Parks and on Hampstead Heath, with clearly marked speed limits
  • revision of the Highway Code to allow cyclists a "left on red" dispensation at traffic lights, allowing them to treat those lights as "stop, look, give way, then go".
  • more active development of residential streets as cycle routes parallel to trunk routes, as in Somers Town for example
  • introduction of tram routes in central London, which can also be used by cycles, and which are much less dangerous for cyclists than buses
  • introduction of express buses with cycle racks, as in San Francisco, particularly for outer boroughs like Barnet.
  • moving away from the physical barriers, railings, high kerbs, streetscape towards the plaza philosophy advocated by, for example, Camden Town Unlimited. Use coloured flagstones or tarmac to highlight cycle areas, but not massive, ugly and expensive barriers.

I look forward to working with you to encourage cycling in Camden and Barnet beyond the election.
